Community Water Fluoridation

Currently, 303 community water systems in Tennessee distribute optimally fluoridated water to 5.28 million people. Based on 2008 data, approximately 91.4% of people who drink water from public water systems in Tennessee are receiving optimally fluoridated water compared with only 72.4% nationally.

The Division of Water Supply of the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation provides technical expertise, monitoring, and surveillance of fluoridating communities to ensure that the fluoride content of the water supply is maintained at an optimal level.

The National Fluoridation Training School located at the Fleming Training Center in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, continues to operate with resources from Oral Health Services and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention of the U.S. Public Health Service.
