The Heart Disease and Stroke Prevention Program was established via a federal capacity-building grant, to reduce the burden of heart disease and stroke among Tennessee residents. The Program is designed to be implemented in various settings that include communities, hospitals, schools, and work sites. Currently, the Program is striving to build capacity via:
Cardiovascular disease (CVD), including heart disease and stroke, remains the leading cause of death in the United States.
Nearly 80.7 million American adults (1 in 3) have some form of CVD, including high blood pressure, coronary heart disease, stroke, congestive heart failure, and other conditions. This is about 1 in 3 adults.
It is estimated that 1.2 million Americans have a coronary attack each year. About 780,000 strokes occur each year among Americans.
CVD was estimated to cost $448.5 billion for 2008, including health expenditures and lost productivity.
