National Toxic Substance Incidents Program
National Toxic Substance Incidents Program (NTSIP)
Overview
The National Toxic Substance Incidents Program (NTSIP) is a state-based surveillance system. The Tennessee Department of Health (TDH) received funding from the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR) for this program in October 2009. The goal of this surveillance system is to prevent ongoing and future exposures and resultant health effects associated with the sudden uncontrolled or illegal release of toxic substances. Toxic substances include chemicals, radiation, and naturally occurring materials that can reasonably be expected to cause harm to people or the environment. Tennessee is one of seven states to receive this funding.
Objectives
The objectives of Tennessee‘s NTSIP are to
- describe toxic substance releases and the public health consequences associated with such releases as they occur throughout Tennessee,
- identify and prioritize vulnerabilities in industry, transportation, and communities as they relate to toxic substance releases, and
- identify, develop, and promote strategies that could prevent ongoing and future exposures and resultant health effects from toxic substance releases.
