Educational Programs

An individual seeking licensure as a hearing instrument specialist or apprentice must have completed two years of course work, or its equivalent, from an accredited college or university.

Continuing Education


Continuing Education

Failure to comply with continuing education requirements may result in disciplinary action against the licensee or registrant. The disciplinary action will be reported on the Department of Health license verification web site.

Basic Requirement

The Council for Hearing Instrument Specialists requires each licensee to take twenty (20) hours of continuing education each renewal cycle.

Acceptable CE

The Council does not pre-approve continuing education programs. Continuing education hours that are clearly not hearing instrument specialist related will be unacceptable.

Documentation

Each licensee shall retain proof of attendance and completion of at least twenty (20) hours of continuing education each renewal cycle.

During the renewal period the licensee shall maintain proof of continuing education for inspection and/or verification. Such evidence must be by submission of one (1) or more of the following:

  1. Certificates verifying the licensee's attendance at continuing education program(s).
  2. An original letter on official stationery from IHS verifying continuing education, specifying date, continuing education hours, program title, licensee's name, license number, and social security number.

Violations

  1. Any licensee who falsely certifies attendance and completion of the required hours of continuing education requirements may be subject to disciplinary action.
  2. Any licensee who fails to obtain the required continuing education hours may be subject to disciplinary action
