Licensure Database System Upgrade Notice

To provide greater efficiency for health professional licensure, the database used by the Tennessee Department of Health to manage applications, renewals and health professional profiles is undergoing a significant system upgrade beginning April 15, 2015. While we expect the upgrade to be a seamless transition for you, our customers, there is the potential of unintended delays in licensure activities. About Health Professional Boards

Health Professionals at Patients BedsideThe Division of Health Related Boards provides administrative support to the boards, committees, councils and one registry that are charged with the licensure and regulation of their respective health care professionals, as well as the Office of Consumer Right to Know. The mission of each board is to safeguard the health, safety and welfare of Tennesseans by requiring those who practice health care professions within this state to be qualified. The boards interpret the laws, rules and regulations to determine the appropriate standards of practice in an effort to ensure the highest degree of professional conduct. The boards are also responsible for the investigation of alleged violations of the Practice Act and rules and are responsible for the discipline of licensees who are found guilty of such violations. Board members, with few exceptions, are appointed by the Governor. 

Important Notices to Licensed Health Professionals

  • Electronic Notification
    Tennessee law gives healthcare professionals the option of being notified electronically of the following: (1) Renewals of license, certification or registration; (2) Any fee increases; (3) Any changes in state law that impact the license holder; and (4) Any board meeting where changes in rules or fees are on the agenda. Please consider opting in, so the Department of Health will also be able to send alerts of critical public health matters impacting Tennessee. Visit and complete the registration process to opt in. Upon receipt of your current email address, you will begin to receive ALL TDH notices electronically rather than through the United States mail. Please note opting in means your licensure renewal notification will be delivered electronically approximately 45 days in advance of the expiration date. For professions that do not permit licensees to renew their licenses online, a paper renewal will continue to be provided.   • CE Requirement for Controlled Substance Prescribing
    Tennessee law requires all prescribers who hold a current DEA license and who prescribe controlled substances to complete a minimum of two(2) hours of continuing education related to controlled substance prescribing biennially to count toward licensees’ mandatory continuing education requirements. To learn more about this requirement and any exclusion that may apply, please refer to T.C.A. §63-1-402. Professional continuing education requirements are specific to the category of professional licensure. To learn how your professional licensure board manages this requirement, please visit your board’s website by going to and clicking on your profession.  Continuing education requirements can be found in the rules and regulations that govern your particular profession.

Consumer Right-to-Know

Certain managed care organizations are required to submit an annual report to the Department of Commerce and Insurance. The Consumer Right to Know Act requires this information to be made available to consumers.

Annual Reports for Managed Care Organizations

Tennessee law mandates that certain health care professionals submit information to the Department regarding details of their training, specialty certification, practice and specific adverse actions. The Department is charged with seeking and collecting this information and providing it to consumers via the Department’s web site.
Health care professionals are charged with ensuring that this information is submitted and is up-to-date within thirty (30) days of any change which requires reporting. To view your current profile, please go to and enter your license number and profession, then click on the Practitioner Profile link. To make changes to your profile, please complete this form: and fax or mail to contact information listed below. Please include the name of your professional licensure board, e.g. “ATTN: Board of Nursing".

Health professionals subject to the Consumer Right-to-Know Law include: alcohol and drug abuse counselors, audiologists, certified nurse practitioners, chiropractors, clinical pastoral therapists, dentists, dietitian or nutritionists, dispensing opticians, electrologists, marital and family therapists, massage therapists, medical doctors, medical laboratory personnel, nursing home administrators, occupational therapists, optometrists, osteopathic physicians, pharmacists, physical therapists, physician assistants, podiatrists, professional counselors, psychologists, registered nurse anesthetists, respiratory care practitioners, social workers, speech pathologists and veterinarians.
