Institution and Instructor Approval

Application for Educational Institution Approval

The EMS Division promotes the training of emergency medical services personnel based on sound educational principles, current medical knowledge and practice. The Emergency Medical Services Board approves all educational institutions desiring to train EMT IV, Paramedic and Critical Care Paramedics. Educational Institutions wishing to provide EMS training will make application to the EMS Division. Once application is received and reviewed by the Division a site visit to the institution is scheduled. The EMS Division then makes a recommendation to the EMS Board as to the institutions compliance with EMS Rule: 1200-12-1-.13.

Initial Licensure

Individuals seeking EMS Professional Certification or License in TN must meet the following Requirements:

First Responder:

• Submit a completed application for certification
• Must be at least eighteen (18) years of age.
• Must  be able to read, write, and speak the English language.
• Must provide documentation of current Basic Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation for the Health Care Provider
• Must have successfully completed a board approved First Responder training program  
• Must obtain a passing score on a board approved written examination
• Must submit application and certification fees.
• Must complete are requirements for certification within two years of course completion date.

EMT IV:

• Must submit a completed application for licensure
• Must be at least eighteen (18) years of age.
• Must able to read, write, and speak the English language.
• Must possess an academic high school diploma or a general equivalency diploma (G.E.D).
• Must have no history within the past three years of habitual intoxication or personal misuse of any drugs or the use of intoxicating liquors, narcotics, controlled substances, or other drugs or stimulants in such manner as to adversely affect the person’s ability to practice as an emergency medical technician.
• Must present evidence to the Division of Emergency Medical Services of a medical examination certifying physical health sufficient to conduct activities associated with patient care, including, but not limited to, visual acuity, speech and hearing, use of all extremities, absence of musculoskeletal deformities, absence of communicable diseases, and suitable emotional fitness to provide for the care and lifting of the ill or injured. This information shall be provided on a form approved by the Board and shall be consistent with the provisions of the Americans with Disabilities Act and the requirements of National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians.
• Must successfully complete an EMS Board approved Emergency Medical Technician Basic IV course.
• Must achieve a passing score on a EMS Board approved written examination
• Must successfully complete an EMS Board approved practical examination.
• Must complete a criminal background check from the State approved vendor
• Must pay all required application and license fees
• Must complete entire license process within two years of course completion

Paramedic:

• Must submit a completed application for Licensure
• Must meet all the Emergency Medical Technician IV  licensure requirements
• Must have successfully completed an EMS Board approved EMT Paramedic course.
• Must achieve a passing score on a Board approved written examination
• Must have successfully completed an EMS Board approved practical examination
• Must complete a criminal background check from the State approved vendor
• Must pay all required application and license fees
• Must complete entire license process within two years of course completion

Paramedic Critical Care:

• Must submit a completed application for Licensure
• Must be currently licensed as paramedic in good standing in Tennessee
• Must have successfully completed an EMS Board approved Critical Care Paramedic Program
• Must achieve a passing score on an EMS Board approved examination.
• Must complete entire license process within two years of course completion.
• Individuals completing a Critical Care Paramedic Course prior to effective date of this rule may make application for endorsement.  Individuals must show documentation of completion of a Critical Care Paramedic Course and must achieve a passing score on an EMS Board approved examination.  Individuals will have two (2) years to complete the examination requirements before being required to repeat the course.

Renewal Requirements

EMS Professional renewal date is based on the individual’s birth month and year.  EMS Professional license will expire on the last day of the individual’s birth month in either an odd or even year depending on whether the individual was born in an odd or even year. Example: Birthday 12-05-1972, expiration date, 12-31-2010.

EMT Basic and EMT IV:

• Payment of renewal fees
• Completion of 2.0 CEU hours or 20 continuing education hours approved by the EMS Division  Or
• Successful completion for an EMS Board approved written examination

Paramedic:

• Payment of renewal fees
• Completion of 3.0 CEU hours or 30 continuing education hours approved by the EMS Division  Or
• Successful completion for an EMS Board approved written examination

Paramedic Critical Care:

• Payment of renewal fees
• Completion of 10 hours of additional continuing education contact hours in critical care topics.  These hours may include but are not limited to continuing education, in-service, and attendance and participation in other approved critical care programs

Retirement of License

EMS Professionals currently licensed may permanently retire his or her license. Those individuals wishing to retire their license must complete the retirement affidavit and submit to EMS Division. 
Any EMS professional who has filed the required information for permanent retirement of his or her license shall be permitted to use the appropriate title:

• For Emergency Medical Technician Basic or EMTBRetired or EMTBR.
• For Emergency Medical Technician Basic IVor EMT IV Retired or EMTB-IVR.

• For Emergency Medical Technician–paramedics, EMT-Paramedic Retired, or EMT-PR.

Reinstatement

EMS Professionals who fail to renew their license on their expiration date may reinstate according to the following.
Those within 60 days of their expiration date must:

• Pay renewal fee and late fee
• Submit proof of required continuing education prior to expiration date

OR

• Obtain a passing score on a board approved written examination

Those individuals expired greater that 60 days of expiration date but less than one year or who did not have continuing education or exam prior to expiration date must:

• Pay application renewal fee and reinstatement fee
• Obtain a passing score on a board approved written examination

Those individuals expired less than two years but greater than one year must:

• Pay application fee, renewal fee and reinstatement fee
• Successfully complete EMS Board Approved refresher course
• Obtain a passing score on an EMS Board approved written and Practical examination
